Family of Samuel Uttley

Samuel Uttley was born December 23, 1837 in Wheatacre, Norfolk, England the fifth of ten children that William Uttley had in his second marriage with Ann Girling. He had two brothers, Nathan who came to Canada in 1856 with Samuel and Jonathan who came to Canada a year or two earlier. Sam had 9 other brothers and sisters in England.
Samuel married Mary Baxter Taylor in 1862 in Guelph. They had seven children, most born in Elmira, Waterloo County. Samuel worked as an engineer and fireman throughout Waterloo County and nearby areas.
The picture on the right is Samuel's home in Doon and was taken in the early 1890s. From left to right, daughter (standing), Mary Baxter (seated), Samuel, another daughter and James T. (seated). The house still stands in 1998.

Currently there are three people that are known to be researching the family of Samuel Uttley: Dorothy Gwynn (great granddaughter of John Herbert Uttley), John Weichel (grandson of William Valores Uttley), and Sandy Dube (great granddaughter of John Herbert Uttley).
